Dean West has been awarded the KY/TN AWA Tennessee Meritorious Award in recognition of his outstanding service at the Murfreesboro Water Resources Department, specifically the Stones River Water Treatment Plant. Dean has been with the department since August 15, 1997, accumulating over 26 years of experience. He holds a Tennessee Grade IV Water Treatment and Grade II Distribution license from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, as well as a Class I Professional Operator certification from Water Professionals International (WPI).
In October 2011, Dean was promoted to the position of Shift Supervisor. In this role, he is one of four supervisors responsible for overseeing the operation of the Stones River Water Treatment Plant, a 20-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) facility that underwent its last major expansion between 2007 and 2010. The plant features various advanced components such as standby power generation, an onsite sodium hypochlorite generation system, a water process control laboratory, and granular activated carbon contactors for the removal of taste, odor, total organic carbon, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products.
Dean’s responsibilities as a Shift Supervisor include training operators assigned to his shift and serving as one of the supervisors on the plant’s HAZMAT team. He is known for his dedication to continuous education, his adoption of new technologies, and his commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization. His efforts ensure that the water leaving the plant during his shift is of the highest possible quality.
Dean is actively involved in the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the KY/TN AWWA. He is a member of the Water Quality and Plant Operations Committee and frequently serves as Room Monitor or Room Moderator at Water Professionals Conferences. Dean also contributes to the plant’s Top Ops team, having been a member for many years and now serving as the team’s coach.
Dean is married to his wife of 30 years, Deanna, and they have two children, Katie and Dean. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, studying history (particularly World War II), and following Chicago sports.
