Chief John Drake announced today that the precinct-based investigation components of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) will be reorganized into specialized and centralized units, starting this Monday. This initiative aims to better respond to crime trends in burglary, organized retail crime, non-domestic felony assault, and community offenses.
Under the new structure, 51 precinct-based detectives and 16 supervisors will transition into these newly created centralized units, which will operate under the Criminal Investigations Division. Chief Drake emphasized that this realignment will allow detectives to work more collaboratively in specialized areas, benefiting residents across Davidson County. Precinct commanders and their teams will still be informed about ongoing investigations and emerging crime trends.
The centralized Burglary Section will consist of 12 detectives and 3 supervisors, covering cases countywide over two shifts. Their offices will be located at the North Precinct. The Organized Retail Crime Section will have 10 detectives and 3 supervisors, closely working with an expanded Fraud Section that will include 7 detectives, up from 5, and 1 supervisor. These sections will operate out of the South Precinct.
The Non-Domestic Felony Assault Section will comprise 12 detectives and 3 supervisors, working over two shifts and subject to callout. Their offices will be based at the Midtown Hills Precinct. Incidents involving non-lethal shootings will continue to be handled by the Specialized Investigations Division’s Non-Lethal Shooting Unit.
The Community Crimes Investigations Section will involve 15 detectives and 5 supervisors who will work on a 24-hour basis, addressing calls including misdemeanor assaults, miscellaneous thefts, unfounded bomb threats, and vandalism. This section will be housed at the Madison Precinct.
