What3Words Technology Helps Rescue Hiker in Beaman Park

A lost hiker in Beaman Park was rescued using What3Words technology.

The Metro Nashville Department of Emergency Communications, in collaboration with the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Aviation Unit, the Nashville Fire Department (NFD), and Metro Parks, successfully located and rescued a missing 69-year-old man from Beaman Park. The rescue was facilitated by the use of What3Words software.

The hiker had become lost off the Laurel Woods Trail and was experiencing heat exhaustion. Initial search efforts by NFD and Parks personnel were hampered by the difficult terrain. They then provided the hiker’s location using What3Words along with a clothing description to the MNPD Aviation Unit.

MNPD Officer Alex Moore was able to locate the hiker from the air using this information. The hiker was then secured into the aircraft and brought to NFD Medics for treatment.

What3Words is a software that simplifies the process of pinpointing precise locations by using a unique addressing system. It divides the world into a grid of 3 meter by 3 meter squares, each identified by a unique combination of three words. This system enhances accuracy, particularly in areas where traditional addresses may be inadequate.

Paul McCallister, Assistant Director of the Nashville Department of Emergency Communications, stated: “In Nashville, we are committed to remaining current with technology such as What3Words. Using this innovative software allows first responders to quickly get someone the help they need, and that is what we are here for.”
