The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) Operations Team is actively monitoring the safety and condition of River Trace through weekly site visits. This ongoing effort aims to identify solutions to ensure the roadway remains open in the future.
On August 5, 2024, NDOT met with their consultant team to refine their mitigation strategy. In the upcoming week, NDOT will coordinate with the Cheatham County Railroad Authority and RJ Corman, the operators of the track alongside River Trace, to develop a collaborative plan. Engineering assessments have identified critical areas of the rock face that need prioritization.
NDOT is finalizing an engineering plan to address these areas, but additional coordination with railroad entities, utilities, and private property owners is required to access and demolish parts of the rock face. This process may extend the timeline, and communication updates may become less frequent. Periodic updates on the status and timeline of the efforts will be provided as new information becomes available.
Residents are encouraged to report any conditions of concern to Metro’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM), which operates 24/7. OEM can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 615-862-8530. This contact method ensures the most prompt notification and response from NDOT.

Local residential traffic can still access the roadway, but cyclists are advised to use Ashland City Highway/Tennessee Highway 12 as an alternative route. A detailed map of the temporary closure and detour can be found here.
