Self-Defense Claim Under Review in Nashville Homicide Case

The self-defense claim of a Nashville homicide suspect is currently under investigation.

A self-defense claim for the July 6 homicide of Jawaun Jones is under review following the arrest of Misael Garcia, 29, by South Precinct officers on Antioch Pike. Jones, 16, was riding his skateboard on Antioch Pike when he was approached by three individuals. A physical altercation ensued, resulting in Jones dropping a pistol. One of the individuals picked up the pistol and shot Jones.

Garcia was recorded by a surveillance camera jumping a nearby fence shortly after the shooting. He was later seen walking on Antioch Pike this morning when three South Precinct officers recognized and approached him. Garcia admitted to being involved.

During an interview with Homicide Unit detectives, Garcia claimed he shot Jones in self-defense. This assertion is currently being investigated by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and the District Attorney’s Office.

Garcia has been charged with evidence tampering after admitting to discarding the pistol following the fatal shooting. He is being held on a $3,200 bond.
