MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has awarded a construction contract to Dement Construction Company to carry out nearly 2 miles of infrastructure improvements along Lamar Avenue (SR 4/US 78). This $149.8 million project extends from south of Shelby Drive to the Raines/Perkins interchange.
Work on Lamar Avenue is set to begin on Monday, August 5, featuring nightly lane closures from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am. During these closures, one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic.
This initiative marks the second phase of a three-phase project aimed at widening the Lamar Avenue corridor. Phase 1, covering the area from the Mississippi State line to Shelby Drive, was completed in the summer of 2023. Phase 2 will widen Lamar Avenue from south of Shelby Drive to near the Raines/Perkins Road interchange, expanding it from a 4-lane divided highway to a 6-lane divided highway. The project will also include modifications to the interchange at Lamar Avenue and Raines/Perkins Road and the construction of a new interchange at Shelby Drive. The estimated completion date for this phase is July 31, 2028. The third and final phase is expected to commence in 2027.
