A Tennessee registered sex offender who was released from a facility in Hardeman County on Wednesday is now in custody in Nashville for brutal attacks on two women. Deontez Drew, 27, faces charges of attempted aggravated rape and especially aggravated kidnapping following an incident involving a 23-year-old woman early Thursday morning. Additionally, he is charged with attempted criminal homicide and especially aggravated robbery for attacking a 39-year-old woman later that same day.
In the early morning attack, the 23-year-old victim was walking from her downtown workplace to her apartment on Division Street when she noticed someone following her. As she walked on 8th Avenue South near Korean Veterans Boulevard, she heard footsteps approaching rapidly. Drew then pushed her to the ground, placed a knife to her side, and dragged her to an alley, threatening to kill her if she did not engage in sex acts. The victim managed to deescalate the situation by convincing Drew to spend the night with her, giving her a chance to escape and call the police.
Later that afternoon, Drew attacked a 39-year-old woman in the hallway of her Pine Street apartment building. He struck her in the face and the back of the head with a wooden baseball bat, also taking her cell phone. Residents who heard the victim’s screams chased Drew, who was eventually found hiding under a car and arrested by Officer Kelly Turcios.
The 39-year-old victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of serious head injuries. Drew is currently held on a bond of $800,000.
