Metro Nashville Public Schools Programs Secure Continued Funding

Key Metro Nashville Public Schools programs receive funding for the new school year.

Mayor Freddie O’Connell has announced that key programs within Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) will continue in the upcoming school year, thanks to funding from the Metro Budget. The Mayor’s office has prioritized education in both the Operating Budget and the Capital Spending Plan, aiming to support student success.

Mayor O’Connell’s first operating budget includes $18 million allocated for new student textbooks and an additional $77 million to continue successful pilot programs initially funded by the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER). With the federal funding ending, the local budget will bridge the gap, ensuring these services remain available through the upcoming school year.

The $77 million in funding will support several essential programs, including:

– Nurses in every school

– Safety ambassadors

– The scholars portfolio (Accelerating Scholars, Promising Scholars, and Enriching Scholars) for tutoring and extra instruction

– Math textbooks and instructional materials

– Mental Health supports

– Professional development for teachers and staff

– College and career readiness programming

– Expansion of Community Achieves

Additionally, schools represent the largest group of investments in the Capital Spending Plan (CSP). The CSP will fund renovations and rebuilds at Lakeview Elementary, Paragon Mills Elementary, and Percy Priest Elementary, with $47 million invested in MNPS properties citywide. The plan also includes solar installation at two schools to reduce costs and increase energy security.

“Metro Schools excelled throughout the pandemic, showing a faster bounce back from learning loss than almost all their other peer school districts,” Mayor O’Connell stated. “We are supporting our students by ensuring they have the programming they need to succeed, and we support our teachers with the best facilities possible.”
