Memphis Man Charged with Threatening U.S. Leaders

A man from Memphis has been charged with making threats against prominent U.S. political figures.

MEMPHIS, TN – United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz has announced that a Memphis-area man, Kyl Alton Hall, has been charged with making threats against President Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama.

On July 27, 2024, Hall, 37, posted several threats on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). In these posts, he threatened to kill, assassinate, and shoot President Biden, crash the President’s plane, assassinate Vice President Harris, and assassinate former President Obama.

A federal indictment was returned on August 20, 2024, charging Hall with two counts of making threats against a sitting President and Vice President in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 871(a), and one count of making threats against a former President under Section 879(a)(1). Each charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison.

The United States Secret Service conducted the investigation, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Will Crow of the National Security and Civil Rights Unit in the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The charges and allegations in the indictment are accusations of criminal conduct. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
