Man Charged with Attempted Murder in I-40 West Shooting

James E. Johnson faces charges for a shooting incident on I-40 West in February 2023.

James E. Johnson, 20, is set to be charged with attempted homicide for his involvement in a shooting incident that occurred on February 14, 2023. The incident took place on I-40 West, where Johnson allegedly fired shots into another vehicle following a collision on Donelson Pike.

After the initial collision, both vehicles pulled into a convenience store. A physical altercation ensued between Johnson and a 31-year-old male passenger from the other vehicle. The passenger then left the scene in a Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by a female. Johnson pursued them in his SUV onto I-40, where he is accused of firing into the Hyundai and striking the passenger. He also allegedly used his vehicle to ram into the victim’s SUV, causing it to crash on the side of the Interstate. The passenger sustained critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Johnson was previously arrested last month for allegedly shooting his sister during an argument and remains in custody on a $416,000 bond. In addition to the attempted murder charge, he will also face charges of aggravated assault and gun possession during the commission of a felony for the February 2023 incident.
