Outstanding police work by the Specialized Investigations Division Detectives led to the recent arrest of David Joseph Bush, 23, who has been indicted for multiple crimes related to a road-rage shooting last September. The incident occurred on I-440 west near Nolensville Pike and involved Davidson County Chancery Court Judge I’Ashea Myles.
During the incident, Judge Myles was struck by broken glass but was otherwise uninjured. Her 25-year-old friend, a Nashville resident, sustained gunshot wounds to her hand and leg and was treated at Vanderbilt Hospital before being discharged for home recovery.
The investigation revealed that a late-model white sedan with glossy paint and a temporary tag was speeding and weaving through traffic. The car approached Judge Myles’ Toyota Prius, traveling in the left lane of I-440, passed on the left shoulder, and then swerved back into a lane on the right. Shots were then fired into the passenger side of the Prius.
Detective Joel Cottrill, part of the Non-Lethal Shooting Team, identified Bush as a suspect through ballistic evidence and cell phone data. The ballistic analysis linked Bush to the Myles case and another shooting on February 10, where shots were fired from a white Nissan sedan into a car on Murfreesboro Pike at Hamilton Crossings. The same gun was used in both incidents.
Chief John Drake stated, “It is a priority of this police department to identify and then apprehend, in a precision manner, those who are putting innocent persons in our community at risk through their violent behavior, particularly gun violence. Technology and science are being used by our detectives to make Nashville safer.”
The Davidson County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Bush with 2 counts of attempted first-degree murder, 6 counts of aggravated assault, and 1 count of reckless endangerment for shooting from a vehicle in the Myles case. An additional felony reckless endangerment count was included for the February 10 shooting. A Criminal Court judge set bond on the 10-count indictment at $500,000.
At the time of his arrest, Bush was free on $125,000 bond from a previous arrest on March 28 for attempted criminal homicide and felony reckless endangerment in another road-rage shooting, where a 55-year-old man was critically wounded in the head on Murfreesboro Pike near Harding Place.
