Majority of Stolen Guns in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

Most stolen guns in Nashville are taken from vehicles, emphasizing the need for better security measures.

The Nashville Police Department strongly encourages residents to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables—especially firearms—and remove the keys to prevent theft.

As of this year, 583 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 19 taken from automobiles just last week. The total number of guns stolen in Davidson County for 2024 stands at 812, meaning 71% of these thefts occurred from vehicles. This marks a 29% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 829 guns had been stolen from vehicles.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) launched a special initiative on February 1 to combat car theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 732 arrests, the recovery of 384 stolen vehicles, and the seizure of 138 guns.

Vehicle burglaries often coincide with vehicle thefts, as many cars remain easy targets due to keys left inside or otherwise accessible. Stolen vehicles are frequently used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
