Majority of Stolen Guns in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

71% of stolen guns in Nashville this year were taken from vehicles.

The Nashville Police Department has issued a strong reminder to residents to lock their automobile doors, secure valuables—especially guns—and remove the keys. As of this year, 556 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 12 of these thefts occurring just last week. This brings the total number of guns stolen in Davidson County to 781 for 2024, with 71% of these thefts happening from automobiles. Compared to the same period last year, there has been a 31% decrease in guns stolen from vehicles, which amounted to 810 at that time.

To address this issue, the MNPD initiated a special program on February 1 aimed at combating car theft and related crimes. This initiative has so far led to 717 arrests, the recovery of 372 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 138 stolen guns.

The department also highlighted a correlation between vehicle burglaries and vehicle theft. Many automobiles remain easy targets because keys are often left inside or easily accessible to thieves. These stolen vehicles, similar to stolen guns, are frequently used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
