Majority of Guns Stolen in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

71% of guns stolen in Nashville this year were taken from vehicles.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) strongly encourages residents to lock their car doors, secure valuables—especially firearms—and remove keys from their vehicles. This advice comes as the city faces a significant issue with guns being stolen from automobiles.

So far this year, 525 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville, including 19 taken just last week. In total, 732 guns have been stolen in Davidson County this year, meaning that 71% of these thefts occurred from vehicles. This marks a 31% decrease from last year when 767 guns had been stolen from vehicles by this time.

To address this issue, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st to combat car theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 678 arrests, the recovery of 350 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 131 guns.

Vehicle burglaries and thefts often occur together. Many cars remain easy targets because owners leave keys inside or make them accessible to thieves. Stolen vehicles are frequently used in further criminal activities, such as carjackings and robberies.
