The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is continuing its efforts to refurbish the Great Circle Bridge. Initially constructed in the 1980s to cross Great Circle Lake, a detention facility managed by Metro Water Services, the bridge was rated in fair condition during a 2021 inspection by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
In response to this, NDOT began long-range planning to evaluate potential refurbishments or repairs. By October 2023, consultants were engaged to design necessary repairs. Preliminary evaluations in April 2024 estimated repair and replacement costs at over $2 million. Further inspections and collaborations with design teams and Metro Water Services aimed to develop more cost-effective solutions.
An additional underwater inspection conducted in April 2024 revealed that the supporting piers were insufficient to carry traffic. NDOT has since met with contractors to develop viable construction solutions and is finalizing design alternatives. Due to the availability of materials and specialized construction crews, the bridge closure and construction are expected to last through June 2025.
During this period, the bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic, but access to all businesses will stay open.
