Vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges have been filed against Nicholas Sterling, a 23-year-old dump truck driver from Ashland City, following a fatal crash that occurred Sunday at 11 p.m. on Charlotte Pike at Old Hickory Boulevard. According to the preliminary investigation, Sterling was driving a Freightliner dump truck southbound on Old Hickory Boulevard when he ran a flashing red light and collided with a Ford Focus traveling east on Charlotte Pike.
The driver of the Ford Focus, Kendall Cartwright, 38, of Nashville, was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger in the Ford, who has not yet been identified due to a lack of identification, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries. Sterling also sustained minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital.
Responding officers detected an odor of alcohol on Sterling’s breath and found an open beer bottle on the floorboard of the dump truck. A search warrant was obtained for a sample of Sterling’s blood. After his release from the hospital, Sterling was booked and is currently being held on a $40,000 bond.
