Arrest Warrant Issued for Edgehill Fatal Shooting

Ronald Russell Jr. charged in the fatal shooting of James Cox III in Edgehill.

Homicide detectives have issued an arrest warrant for Ronald Lamont Russell Jr., 34, in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred early Friday morning in the Edgehill community on Deford Bailey Avenue. The incident was captured on surveillance video, showing Russell shooting 41-year-old James B. Cox III multiple times, even after Cox was on the ground. Cox was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Russell was later brought to the same hospital by his mother for treatment of a minor head injury. While at the hospital, Russell was overheard discussing his involvement in a shootout. According to his mother, Russell suffers from schizophrenia. Russell claimed he shot Cox because he believed Cox had harmed his sister, a belief that was unfounded as the sister’s injury was due to medical complications.

During a hospital interview, Russell explained that he confronted Cox outside his sister’s apartment, attempted to stab him, and then wrestled him to the ground. He claimed a gun Cox was carrying became loose, which he then used to shoot Cox multiple times. Russell also stated that Cox had shot him, resulting in a graze wound. After the shooting, Russell disposed of the gun in a nearby field, where a nine-millimeter pistol was later recovered.

Russell is currently undergoing a psychological evaluation and will be booked on the murder warrant upon his discharge from the hospital.
