Applications Open for MNPD Fall 2024 Community Police Academy

MNPD opens applications for the Fall 2024 Community Police Academy, running from September to November.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has announced that applications are now being accepted for the 53rd session of its Community Police Academy set for Fall 2024. The academy will be held at the West Precinct, located at 5500 Charlotte Pike, on Tuesday evenings and select Thursdays over a 12-week period starting September 3 and concluding on November 19.

Nashville residents interested in learning about the operations and law enforcement strategies of their local police department are encouraged to apply for this free and informative course. Classes are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the application deadline is August 22. Applications can be submitted online by visiting this link.

Participants will gain insights into police work through various guest speakers, including members from the police department’s specialized units. Presentations will cover areas such as the TITANS Unit, Entertainment District Unit, Youth Services, Domestic Violence, Criminal Investigations, Violent Crimes, and Traffic Divisions. Additionally, there will be opportunities for ride-alongs with on-duty officers and visits to the MNPD Crime Lab, Training Academy, and gun range.

Chief John Drake stated, “The Community Police Academy is a really unique and fun way to learn about our police department’s many components, and I invite folks from neighborhoods across Nashville to apply. The West Precinct is easily accessible from I-40.”

To participate, individuals must commit to attending at least 9 of the 12 weeks, be a resident or business owner in Davidson County, be at least 18 years old, and have no arrest record. While the course provides an understanding of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s operations, it does not certify participants as law enforcement officers.

Since its inception in 1995, the Community Police Academy has graduated 2,081 individuals.

Great Circle Road Bridge Closure Update

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is working on refurbishing the Great Circle Bridge, initially constructed in the 1980s. Following inspections that rated the bridge as fair, NDOT began planning necessary repairs in collaboration with consultants and Metro Water Services, estimating costs at over $2 million. An underwater inspection revealed inadequate supporting piers, leading to a bridge closure expected to last through June 2025. Businesses will remain accessible during this period.
