Career and technical education students from Tennessee colleges and postsecondary programs won 57 medals at the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta. These students demonstrated excellence in various technical and leadership skills competitions at the 2024 SkillsUSA Championships.
Tennessee students brought home 29 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and seven bronze medals. Most of these awards were won by students from Tennessee Board of Regents institutions, which include the state’s public community and technical colleges. A total of 132 students from 26 Tennessee institutions participated in 83 of the 115 different competitions.
Tennessee ranked second in the overall number of medals won at the postsecondary level, just behind Georgia. The SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference is the largest gathering of students who represent America’s future skilled workforce. The event attracts more than 16,000 attendees, including students, instructors, industry partners, and government officials.
Daphne Brown, SkillsUSA Tennessee Postsecondary state director, expressed pride in the accomplishments of Tennessee students. “Tennessee postsecondary students placed in the top four in 41 of the 83 contests they competed in, showcasing the exceptional quality of career and technical education provided by Tennessee colleges,” she said.
Among the Tennessee Board of Regents institutions, students from Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Chattanooga won the most medals, followed by TCAT Hartsville, TCAT Memphis, and TCAT Morristown. Other institutions with medalists included Pellissippi State Community College, Northeast State Community College, TCAT Henry/Carroll, and several other TCAT campuses. Additionally, students from Southern Adventist University and Resource Valley Construction Training Council also won medals.
Two TCAT colleges, Chattanooga and Pulaski, were recognized as Models of Excellence for 2024, the highest honor for SkillsUSA chapters. Tennessee also received an award for the largest membership increase in its SkillsUSA college/postsecondary division.
