NASHVILLE, Tenn.—June 27, 2024—The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has awarded the Tennessee State Museum and the John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library at Fisk University the Award of Excellence for their exhibition, Building a Bright Future: Black Communities and Rosenwald Schools in Tennessee, and its related programming. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 79th year, are the foremost recognition for achievements in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

The Tennessee State Museum, in collaboration with the John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library at Fisk University, organized a temporary exhibition and a two-day symposium in 2023. These events focused on the legacy of Rosenwald schools in Tennessee, aiming to foster a diverse and inclusive learning space for all Tennesseans to honor the state’s Black educational history. The exhibition highlighted the resilience and perseverance of Black communities striving for equal access to education through the Rosenwald School program. The legacy of these efforts continues today, as these communities work to preserve the schools and their history.

This year, AASLH bestowed 47 national awards recognizing individuals, projects, exhibits, and publications that exemplify excellence in the field of state and local history. The winners are celebrated for their contributions and leadership in preserving history.

The AASLH awards program, established in 1945, seeks to promote high standards in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history across the United States. These awards not only acknowledge significant achievements but also highlight the contributions of various organizations and institutions in the field.
