Tennessee Awards $332K to Boost Recycling and Combat Food Waste

Tennessee grants $332,953 to enhance recycling education and manage organic waste.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has announced the allocation of $332,953 in grants aimed at improving education and outreach related to recycling and managing organic waste. The initiative is designed to reduce landfill waste and elevate recycling education efforts across the state.

The grant program is structured to assist local communities in reaching their solid waste and recycling objectives. By upgrading infrastructure and providing accessible opportunities for residents to participate, local governments can divert more waste from landfills.

These grants are overseen by TDEC’s Division of Solid Waste Management. Greg Young, deputy commissioner for TDEC’s Bureau of Environment, expressed satisfaction with the community’s enthusiasm for these grants. “We are pleased to see the interest and enthusiasm for these solid waste grants,” he said. “These communities are committed to reducing waste in Tennessee, and we thank them for going through the application process.”

The Education and Outreach grants will support local governments in creating materials that consistently promote waste reduction and recycling best practices. The goal is to inform residents about recyclable materials, recycling locations, and schedules.

The Organics Management grants are designated for counties, cities, solid waste authorities, and other tax-exempt nonprofit recycling organizations classified as 501c(3). These grants focus on fostering public/private partnerships, expanding organics management services, and reducing food waste.
