A pedestrian was fatally injured in a hit-and-run collision on Saturday night on Murfreesboro Pike near Ransom Place. The incident, which occurred around 10:50 p.m., is currently under investigation by the South Precinct officers.
According to evidence and witness statements, a Ford Explorer and a Hyundai Elantra were both traveling east on Murfreesboro Pike. The unidentified pedestrian was initially struck by the Ford Explorer in the inside eastbound lane and subsequently hit by the Hyundai Elantra in the outside eastbound lane. The driver of the Explorer fled the scene, while the driver of the Elantra stopped and cooperated with the authorities.
The pedestrian, a man estimated to be in his 30s, was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
During the on-scene investigation, the driver of the Explorer, Christian Barajas-Bautista, 18, was identified after his sister contacted the police, informing them that her brother had admitted to hitting someone with his vehicle. Barajas-Bautista confirmed during an interview that he was driving the Explorer at the time of the collision. The vehicle, which had damage consistent with the incident, was impounded.
