The Old Fort Golf Club course is set to reopen for golf on Friday, August 30, 2024, following extensive renovations. Golfers can begin scheduling tee times five days in advance, starting at 7 a.m. on August 25, 2024. Reservations can be made online at www.oldfortgolfclub.com or by calling 615-896-2448. A CityTV video detailing the renovations can be viewed here.
“We’re definitely ready to welcome golfers back,” said Golf Department Director Trey Adams. “I know golfers will be excited about the changes. We’re already getting positive feedback from practice range golfers seeing the course from a distance.”
The $1.6 million renovation project began in January 2024. The bunker renovation reshaped existing bunkers, added new ones, and removed others. By mid-March 2024, the course underwent a greens renovation, replacing cool-weather Bent grass with warm-weather Prizm Zoysia. During this time, the entire course was closed to golfers to facilitate the work.
“We now have a new green surface, a new warm-season grass on all the greens at Old Fort,” Adams stated. “Groundskeeping staff are working every day to prepare the course so when golfers come out to play a round, it will be a good, positive experience.”
As part of the renovation, a new driving range tee was added and opened on Monday, July 15, 2024. The practice tee was relocated back approximately 40 yards to allow golfers to hit woods and drivers for longer distances. “That’s one of the things our golfers have requested, and they seem to be very happy that they can practice their longer drives,” added Adams. “Practice golf balls come in three different sizes or amounts so they can hit all the clubs in their golf bag before or after a round of golf.”
Adams also discussed the challenges of establishing the new grass on the greens while maintaining a low mowing height to make the greens faster for putting. “In order to do that while not killing the grass, you really have to ensure you establish good root depth. That’s what our groundskeeping staff is doing now—slowly working the height of the grass,” he explained.
The previous greens, made of cool-season grass with Bermuda on the fairways, had shrunk approximately ten percent in size over time. The greens are now larger, restored to their original shape and size.
A new drainage system has been added under the renovated bunkers to provide a more consistent sand surface, preventing standing water or washouts after rainfall.
Watermark Golf and Nathan Crace Design, along with Wadsworth Golf Construction, were contracted to renovate the course. Wadsworth Golf renovated the bunkers and greens with enhanced drainage and more durable warm-season grass, which will reduce maintenance costs.
