Next Round of Street Paving to Begin in Knoxville

Knoxville plans to pave an additional 18 miles of streets this fall.

Contractor crews in the first half of summer paved 14.7 miles of City streets in the 1st, 2nd, and 6th City Council districts, covering South, West, and East Knoxville. Between now and late fall, Rogers Group crews will be milling and paving another 18 miles in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th districts, which include Northwest and North Knoxville, plus parts of the 2nd District that are being completed.

In total, this year’s paving work represents an $8.6 million investment. Engineering Director Tom Clabo highlighted the extensive logistical planning involved in the pavement management program, which considers streets due for maintenance, necessary utility upgrades, and the timing of resurfacing to maximize efficiency and avoid damage to newly paved streets.

City Code mandates that resurfacing be evenly distributed across all parts of the city. Since 1988, the City has paved 1,519.3 miles, with about 253 miles paved in each district over 36 years.

Some of the largest paving projects this year are spread throughout the city, including Parkside Drive, Woodrow Drive, Mitchell Street, Old Broadway, Luscombe Drive, Clinch Avenue, Cottrell Street, Maple Road, Armstrong Avenue, West Ford Valley Road, East Lake Forest Drive, McKamey Road, and Gresham Road.
