Nashville Police Urge Residents to Secure Vehicles and Firearms

Over 70% of stolen guns in Nashville are taken from vehicles.

The Nashville Police Department is urging residents to lock their car doors, secure valuables, especially firearms, and remove their keys to prevent thefts.

As of this year, 505 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 22 thefts occurring just last week. In total, 707 guns have been stolen in Davidson County this year, meaning 71% of these thefts were from vehicles. This marks a 31% decrease from the same period last year, when 738 guns were stolen from vehicles.

To combat car theft and related crimes, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st, resulting in 666 arrests, the recovery of 344 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 127 stolen guns.

Vehicle theft often accompanies vehicle burglaries. Many cars remain easy targets because keys are left inside or are easily accessible to thieves. Stolen vehicles, like stolen guns, are frequently used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
