Nashville OEM Warns of Dangerous Heat During July 4th Celebrations

Nashville OEM advises caution due to extreme heat during July 4th celebrations.

The City of Nashville is set to celebrate Independence Day with the annual “Let Freedom Sing!” event, but officials are urging residents and visitors to take precautions due to dangerous heat forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday, July 4th. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 pm on Wednesday, with the rest of the day being sunny and hot, reaching a high of 98 degrees. On July 4th, there is a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 am, with temperatures expected to reach 96 degrees. When factoring in humidity, heat indexes are expected to approach 110 degrees.

Such extreme heat poses serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Nashville Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and its Emergency Support Unit (ESU) will conduct heat patrols during the week, focusing on areas where unhoused people gather, construction sites, and outdoor workers. They will provide water and connect individuals to resources if needed.

The Nashville Fire Department and OEM Director, Chief William Swann, emphasized the importance of safety during the festivities. “While we are thrilled to celebrate our nation’s independence with our community, the safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” he said. “We encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and cool during the festivities.”

Here are some safety tips for heat protection:

– **Stay Hydrated**: Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

– **Dress Appropriately**: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.

– **Seek Shade**: Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible.

– **Use Sunscreen**: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours.

– **Know the Signs**: Be aware of symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Move to a cooler location and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

The “Let Freedom Sing!” event will feature live music, fireworks, and various family-friendly activities. For more information and resources on heat safety, visit the National Weather Service.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the Fourth of July celebrations!
