Memphis Man Sentenced for Hobbs Act Robbery

Malik Motley sentenced to 303 months for Hobbs Act robbery and firearm discharge.

Malik Motley, a 25-year-old resident of Memphis, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 303 months in federal prison following his conviction for a Hobbs Act robbery committed in October 2021. The announcement was made by Kevin G. Ritz, United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

Court records indicate that on October 3, 2021, Motley entered a Dollar General store in the Memphis area, wearing a black mask. Instead of paying for the items he selected, Motley brandished a silver handgun and demanded money from the register. When the cashier could not open the register, Motley shot her in the face at point-blank range, took the items from the counter, and fled the scene.

Motley was apprehended two days later in an abandoned house. During a search of his residence, authorities found the clothing he wore during the robbery and a loaded silver Smith & Wesson .357 revolver.

In October 2023, Motley pled guilty to one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. On July 20, 2024, United States District Court Judge John T. Fowlkes sentenced Motley to 303 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. It is important to note that there is no parole in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force and the Memphis Police Department. United States Attorney Kevin Ritz extended his gratitude to Assistant United States Attorney Raney Irwin, who prosecuted the case, as well as the law enforcement officers involved in the investigation.
