A College Grove man who was critically injured in a multi-vehicle collision on I-65 North on July 25 has died. The incident involved Matthew Pappas, 33, who was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck. According to the investigation, Pappas was traveling erratically and at a high speed before the crash occurred.
The collision sequence began when Pappas’s vehicle sideswiped a Subaru Crosstrack and subsequently struck an Audi Q5 from behind. The impact caused the Audi to hit a fourth vehicle, a Ford F-150, on its passenger side. The driver of the Audi was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Pappas, who hails from Chapel Hill, exhibited signs of alcohol consumption, including an odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes. He confessed to having consumed a beer before the crash. Authorities obtained a search warrant for his blood sample. Following his release from the hospital on July 26, Pappas faced multiple charges, including vehicular assault, reckless driving, implied consent, and driving on a suspended license. He was released on a $16,000 bond.
