The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) strongly encourages residents to lock their automobile doors, secure valuables—especially guns—and remove the keys. This advisory comes as the city faces a significant issue with firearms being stolen from vehicles.
As of this year, 423 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 11 taken from automobiles just last week. The total number of guns stolen in Davidson County in 2024 stands at 594, indicating that 71% of these thefts involve guns taken from vehicles. This marks a 36% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 663 guns were stolen from vehicles.
MNPD has implemented a special initiative to combat car theft and related crimes, which began on February 1st. This initiative has led to 589 arrests and the recovery of 318 stolen vehicles and 119 guns.
Vehicle thefts often accompany vehicle burglaries. Many automobiles remain easy targets because keys are left inside or made easily accessible to thieves. Stolen vehicles, like guns taken from vehicles, are frequently used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
