Majority of Nashville’s Stolen Guns Taken from Vehicles

Most stolen guns in Nashville are taken from vehicles, according to police data.

The Nashville Police Department is urging residents to lock their car doors, secure valuables, especially guns, and remove keys from their vehicles. This year, 462 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 14 taken just last week. In total, 649 guns have been reported stolen in Davidson County in 2024, with 71% of these being taken from automobiles. This marks a 34% decrease from the same period last year, where 709 guns had been stolen from vehicles.

To address this issue, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st to combat car theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 632 arrests, the recovery of 336 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 123 guns.

Vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts often go hand in hand. Many automobiles remain easy targets because keys are left inside or are accessible to thieves. Stolen vehicles, like guns taken from cars, are frequently used in criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
