Majority of Guns Stolen in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

Most guns reported stolen in Nashville were taken from vehicles.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is urging residents to lock their car doors, secure valuables, especially firearms, and remove keys from their vehicles. This advisory comes in light of data showing a significant number of stolen guns being taken from vehicles.

As of this year, 486 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 22 of these incidents occurring just last week. In total, 683 guns have been stolen in Davidson County this year, indicating that 71% of these thefts involved automobiles. Comparatively, the same period last year saw 725 guns stolen from vehicles, reflecting a 32% decrease so far this year.

In response to these thefts, MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st to tackle car theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 649 arrests, the recovery of 341 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 123 guns.

Vehicle thefts often coincide with vehicle burglaries. Many vehicles are easy targets for thieves because keys are left inside or are otherwise accessible. Similar to guns stolen from vehicles, these stolen automobiles are frequently used in further criminal activities, such as carjackings and robberies.
