MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (July 19, 2024) The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is currently investigating a hit-and-run collision that resulted in the death of a bicyclist. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 18, in the 2900 block of S. Rutherford Blvd. at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The driver involved in the collision, identified as 41-year-old Isaiah Isom from Murfreesboro, initially fled the scene. Isom was driving a 2011 Buick Enclave at the time of the accident. The identity of the 30-year-old male bicyclist is being withheld until his next of kin have been notified.
Shortly after the incident, two women returned the Buick Enclave to the crash site, with one falsely claiming to be the driver. This claim was later proven to be false. Investigators visited Isom at his home, where he initially denied involvement but subsequently admitted to driving the vehicle during the collision.
Isom has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene involving death or serious bodily injury and driving on a revoked license due to a previous DUI. Additional charges may be filed. The two women who attempted to mislead investigators have been interviewed, and their involvement will be reviewed by the Rutherford County District Attorney General’s Office and a Rutherford County Grand Jury.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Officer Corey Smelser via email at 0973@murfreesborotn.gov.
Isaiah Isom is currently held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on an $8,000 bond. His court date is scheduled for August 19 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
