The driver involved in a fatal hit and run incident on Sunday evening has been arrested and charged. According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Sterling L. Jenkins, 43, struck pedestrian Gregory Torrance Sr., 65, at 8:45 p.m. on Myatt Drive at Roosevelt Avenue.
Jenkins was driving a Nissan Armada northbound on Myatt Drive when he hit Torrance, who was using a motorized wheelchair in an unmarked crosswalk. Torrance, a Nashville resident, died at the scene.
Following the collision, Jenkins did not stop to render aid. Instead, he continued driving north and pulled into a Thorntons gas station at 317 Myatt Drive. Surveillance footage captured him inspecting the damage to his SUV before driving away.
MNPD detectives were able to trace Jenkins’ route by following the trail left by the damaged vehicle’s brake caliper. They located both Jenkins and his vehicle at his residence on Canton Pass. During questioning, Jenkins admitted to being the driver and acknowledged that he was aware of the collision.
Jenkins faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving death, failure to render aid, failure to file an accident report, and failure to provide financial responsibility. He is currently free on a $12,000 bond.
The preliminary investigation suggests that Jenkins’ failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian was a contributing factor to the fatal crash.
