The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is urging residents to take measures to secure their vehicles and any valuables inside, especially firearms. As of this year, 444 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles in Nashville. Just last week alone, 29 firearms were taken from automobiles. This brings the total number of guns stolen in Davidson County to 622 for the year, with 71% of these thefts involving vehicles. Comparatively, 692 guns had been stolen from vehicles at the same time last year.
To address this issue, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st aimed at reducing car theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 612 arrests, the recovery of 328 stolen vehicles, and the confiscation of 122 guns.
The MNPD emphasizes that vehicle burglaries and thefts often go hand in hand. Many vehicles remain easy targets because keys are left inside or otherwise accessible to thieves. Stolen vehicles, much like stolen guns, frequently end up being used in further criminal activities, such as carjackings and robberies.
