Gibson County Man Sentenced for Child Pornography Crimes

Jason Daniel Smith receives a 15-year federal prison sentence for child pornography offenses.

Jason Daniel Smith, a 33-year-old resident of Gibson County, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for possessing and distributing child sex abuse materials. This sentence was announced by Kevin G. Ritz, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

Court documents revealed that on March 13, 2019, Smith used a file-sharing program to distribute over 150 files of child sex abuse material to an undercover police officer in Indiana. Indiana officers, in collaboration with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence in Milan, Tennessee, where they found more than 20,000 videos and images of child pornography. Smith was subsequently arrested and charged in Gibson County Circuit Court.

While awaiting trial for the 2019 charges, Smith committed a similar offense on January 24, 2023, by distributing over 100 files of child sex abuse materials to an agent with the Memphis FBI Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered more than 10,000 additional images and videos of child pornography.

In July 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Smith on four counts related to the distribution and possession of child pornography. Smith pled guilty to these charges in February 2024. On July 29, 2024, United States District Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson sentenced Smith to 188 months in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Smith is also required to register as a sex offender in any state where he resides, works, or attends school. Federal sentences do not include the possibility of parole.

The investigation involved the Michigan City Police Department in Indiana, the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Memphis FBI Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force. United States Attorney Kevin Ritz thanked Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Delery, who prosecuted the case, along with the law enforcement partners involved in the investigation.
