Gary Rankin, one of the most successful high school football coaches in Tennessee, has been inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame as part of the Hall’s 2024 class. Rankin’s illustrious career, spanning over four decades, includes 484 career wins and a record 17 state championships.
Rankin began his coaching career at his alma mater, Smith County High School, inspired by his father’s advice to have a backup plan. He took a real estate course in Nashville but never had to use it, as his coaching career flourished.
The National High School Hall of Fame, established in 1982 by the NFHS, honors high school athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and performing arts directors for their extraordinary achievements. The 2024 class includes 11 inductees: four athletes, four coaches, one official, and two administrators.
Rankin’s career highlights include turning Murfreesboro’s Riverdale into a nationally acclaimed powerhouse and leading Alcoa and Boyd Buchanan to multiple state championships. Despite an initial 0-10 season, Rankin’s consistency and ability to develop winning programs have been hallmarks of his career.
Rankin expressed his surprise and gratitude for the honor, acknowledging the influence of other Tennessee inductees and legendary figures in the Hall of Fame. He highlighted the importance of consistency and the impact of his work on the lives of his players.
Rankin continues to coach and inspire, aiming to impact more lives through high school football. His dedication to the sport and his players remains unwavering as he looks forward to future seasons.
