Detectives have charged D’Andre Pruitt, 23, with reckless homicide, child neglect, and evidence tampering following the fatal shooting of his 3-year-old son, Aydeen Pruitt. The incident occurred on Wednesday night.
Pruitt surrendered to police this afternoon at a church, facilitated by a local pastor. During an interview at police headquarters, Pruitt explained that he had removed a pistol from his pocket and placed it on the floor of a bedroom. He claimed he did not realize Aydeen was present in the room when the child picked up the gun and accidentally shot himself in the head.
Following the 8:50 p.m. shooting, Pruitt fled from the family’s Oakwood Avenue apartment. Aydeen was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
