Detective Wounded by Murder Suspect in Madison

Detective Carlos Diaz was shot by murder suspect Miqueal Williams during an arrest attempt.

Specialized Investigations Division Detective Carlos Diaz is recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg, inflicted by homicide suspect Miqueal Williams. The incident occurred as Detective Diaz and his colleagues attempted to arrest Williams on a 1st-degree murder indictment at an apartment complex located at 808 Skyline Ridge Drive in Madison.

Williams, 31, was also wounded in the hip during the exchange of gunfire with police. Both Detective Diaz and Williams sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are currently being treated at Skyline Medical Center. Williams faces charges for the fatal shooting of Samuel Edwards Jr., 32, which took place on March 4 at an apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike. A Criminal Court judge has set a $1 million bond for Williams on the murder indictment.

Detective Diaz and his colleagues from the TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) Unit had received information that Williams was at the Madison apartment complex. They observed him entering the passenger seat of a vehicle and approached, demanding that he put his hands up. Instead, Williams exited the vehicle with a semi-automatic pistol and engaged in a gunfire exchange with Detective Diaz, who was hit in the leg and moved to a safer area of the parking lot. During the exchange, Detective Joseph Gonzales approached the vehicle and fired at Williams through the open passenger side door.

Detective Diaz is a veteran law enforcement officer who transitioned to the Nashville Police Department from the New York City Police Department in November 2022. Detective Gonzales, also a veteran, joined the Nashville Police Department from the Fullerton, California Police Department in October 2021. Both detectives are currently on routine administrative assignment as the investigation into the shooting continues.

The TITANS Unit is a part of the MNPD’s precision policing strategy, assisting the Homicide Unit and other components in locating and apprehending dangerous individuals wanted for violent crimes, often involving gunfire.
