Detective Carlos Diaz of the Specialized Investigations Division is recovering from a gunshot wound after being shot by homicide suspect Miqueal Williams. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 808 Skyline Ridge Drive in Madison as officers attempted to arrest Williams on a first-degree murder indictment.
Williams, 31, was also wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Both Diaz and Williams sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving treatment at Skyline Medical Center. Williams is indicted for the March 4 fatal shooting of Samuel Edwards Jr., 32, at an apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike. His bond has been set at $1 million.
Detective Diaz, along with his colleagues from the TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) Unit, identified Williams at the Madison apartment complex and saw him enter a vehicle. When officers approached and instructed Williams to raise his hands, he instead exited the vehicle with a semi-automatic pistol and engaged in gunfire with Detective Diaz, striking him in the leg. Detective Joseph Gonzales then fired at Williams through the vehicle’s open passenger side door.
Detective Diaz joined the Nashville police from the New York City Police Department in November 2022, while Detective Gonzales transitioned from the Fullerton, California Police Department in October 2021. Both detectives are currently on routine administrative assignment during the shooting investigation.
The TITANS Unit, part of the MNPD’s precision policing strategy, focuses on locating and apprehending individuals wanted for violent crimes, often involving gunfire. Body-worn camera footage from the incident is available on YouTube: body-worn camera footage. Note that Detective Diaz’s camera did not capture audio at the time of the shooting, and his footage includes both real-time and slowed-down clips due to the rapid exchange of gunfire. Detective Gonzales’ footage is presented in real time.
