Each month, CityTV features “Traffic Minute” to advise motorists on navigating congested traffic using best practices. In this edition, CityTV’s Steve Burris discusses the dangers and legality of improper loading and unloading in the center lane. Watch the video here.
Loading and unloading vehicles in the center turn lane pose significant dangers and are against the law. Murfreesboro City Ordinance 32-1302 states, “No person shall stop, park or leave standing any vehicle upon any street or highway, whether attended or unattended.” The Murfreesboro Police Department frequently receives calls about this issue, but often the drivers have left by the time officers arrive.
Blocking the turn lane not only violates the law but also increases the risk of accidents. Vehicles or pedestrians involved in loading or unloading are more likely to be struck, and the obstructing vehicle can block the view of other drivers trying to exit or enter properties. All loading or unloading must occur on business property.
The Murfreesboro Police Department and the City Transportation Department collaborate with CityTV to visually demonstrate traffic issues and provide advice to the public. For more City News online, visit www.Murfreesborotn.gov.
