Black Arts Bash Celebrates Black Artists at Cheekwood

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens hosts an all-day event celebrating Black artists with music, dance, art, and more.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Cheekwood Estate & Gardens will host the Black Arts Bash, a full-day celebration of Black artists, on Saturday, August 17th from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event will feature a variety of performances and activities showcasing music, dance, spoken word, and visual arts. The Black Opry, an organization that supports Black artists in country, Americana, blues, folk, and roots music, will be spotlighted with performances on the Arboretum Lawn stage throughout the day. Drum and dance, as well as spoken word performances, will take place inside Botanic Hall.

Additional offerings include hands-on activities for children, a community mural project, and a lounge featuring African American-owned spirits brands. Local Black chefs will provide Southern homecooked favorites, and an art exhibition in the Frist Learning Center will feature works from both emerging and established artists.

– Ping Rose: 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.

– Jett Holden: 2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.

– Grace Givertz: 3:45 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

– Carmen Dianne: 5:30 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.

– Surprise Performer: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

**Family Activity: Learn about DeFord Bailey (Across from Botanic Hall):**

– Make your own harmonica, listen to recordings, and learn about DeFord Bailey’s legacy from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

– Harmonica 101 led by Carlos DeFord Bailey from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

**Performances in Massey Auditorium:**

– Southern Word (Spoken Word): 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

– AfricaNashville: 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.

– Sankofa African Drum and Dance: 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

**Community Activity (Arboretum Lawn):**

– Create a community mural with artists XPayne and DaShawn Lewis from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

**Storytime with Dorena Williamson (Across from Botanic Hall):**

– Sessions at 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

**Food and Goods Vendors:**

– Local Black chefs and artisans will offer food and goods from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Lot B.

Tickets for the event are free for Cheekwood members. For non-members, adult tickets are priced at $20, and youth (ages 3-17) can attend for free. All tickets include access to the Historic Mansion & Museum.
