Authorities Seek Ulises Martinez in Connection with Restaurant Owner’s Death

Police are searching for Ulises Martinez, wanted for questioning in the death of restaurant owner Matthew Carney.

Authorities are requesting the public’s assistance in locating Ulises Martinez, 24, who is wanted for questioning in the death of Matthew Carney, owner of Smokin Thighs restaurant. Carney was critically injured by a pickup truck on June 19 at the restaurant’s property located at 611 Wedgewood Avenue and subsequently died from his injuries on July 4.

The ongoing investigation has identified Martinez as an individual who likely has information relevant to the case. An arrest warrant has been issued for Martinez concerning the theft of a pickup truck from a church on Franklin Pike on June 19.

On Wednesday afternoon, detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division observed Martinez entering the back seat of a car in the parking lot of a Bell Road motel. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated rapidly. An MNPD helicopter tracked the car as it reached a dead-end gravel road in the 9700 block of Concord Road in Williamson County. The vehicle’s three occupants fled into the nearby woods. With assistance from the Brentwood Police, two of the individuals were apprehended, but Martinez managed to escape.

The driver of the car, Francisco Martinez-Lopez, 25, has been charged in Nashville with felony evasion of arrest, and his bond was set at $2,500 by a judicial commissioner. The second individual, identified through fingerprints as Adrian Diaz, 31, faces charges in Williamson County for evading arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia, with his bond set at $26,000.
