The TSSAA Board of Control convened at the TSSAA office in Hermitage for a two-day meeting on June 4 and 5, 2024, to discuss over 30 agenda items.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to deliberations on the classification for the 2025-2029 cycle. Key decisions included the expansion of Division I cross-country to three classes. In Division I golf and tennis, two classes will remain, with the smaller two-thirds of schools in Class A and the larger schools in Class AA.
Starting in the 2024-25 school year, lacrosse will be a sanctioned sport with two classes each in Division I and Division II for both boys and girls. The classifications will be as follows:
– Division I A (0-1667 students)
– Division I AA (1668 and above)
– Division II A (0-483 students)
– Division II AA (483 and above)
Other sports will retain their current classification structures for the upcoming cycle.
The Board reviewed financial reports for basketball, wrestling, and bowling tournaments, as well as for the Athletic Directors and Cheer Coaches conferences. Additionally, they approved a proposal from the TSSAA Soccer Advisory Committee to implement an RPI system based on regular season results for seeding Division I teams advancing to the central tournament site in both Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer.
A report detailing coaches’ ejections, disciplinary actions, and unsportsmanlike incidents during the 2023-24 school year was presented. The Board also voted to continue the A. F. Bridges Awards Program for the upcoming school year, allocating $27,000 in awards for 27 winning schools.
Annoor Academy of Knoxville was accepted for membership in TSSAA. The school plans to start with soccer and may expand to other sports in the future.
