Violent Crimes Division detectives apprehended Cornelius Pierce, 49, on Wednesday after a high-speed chase involving a stolen black Nissan Rogue. The vehicle was reportedly taken during a robbery on June 10th at the Mapco located at 553 Murfreesboro Pike. When officers attempted to stop Pierce, he fled at a high speed.
An MNPD helicopter tracked the vehicle’s location as it left Davidson County, allowing Franklin and Brentwood officers to attempt an interception. Brentwood officers successfully deployed spike strips on I-65 North, bringing the vehicle to a stop. Pierce exited the vehicle, leapt over the divider wall, and ran across I-65 South, where he allegedly attempted to carjack another vehicle but was struck by its side view mirror. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
Pierce was already wanted for the Mapco robbery, where he allegedly pretended to buy a fountain drink before rushing behind the counter when the clerk opened the register. The clerk managed to close the register, preventing Pierce from taking any cash. He then reportedly grabbed the clerk by the head/neck, taking her cell phone and keys, and fled in the Nissan Rogue.
At the time of this incident, Pierce was out on a $4,000 bond following a May 19th arrest for assault and theft. He is accused of stealing three cases of beer from the Monroe Street Kroger and throwing one at a security guard who tried to intervene. Additionally, Pierce has pending charges from an April 26th arrest for vehicle theft, evading arrest, and resisting arrest, with a bond set at $8,000.
Upon his release from the hospital, Pierce will face these latest charges.
