It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone younger than 16 years old. Purchasers close to that age must present a state-issued photo identification as proof of age or be accompanied by an adult. It is also illegal to sell fireworks to any intoxicated or irresponsible person.
Within the city, it is illegal to sell, use, or possess certain types of fireworks, including mortar fireworks with a tube (single or multiple) greater than 1½” in diameter, reloadable fireworks, and bottle rockets.
Fireworks cannot be used on private property without the owner’s permission, on public property (including public streets), within 600 feet of any church, hospital, or public school, and within 22 feet of a fireworks vendor. The “use” of a firework is defined as where it is lit or launched and where it is directed or lands.
Additionally, fireworks cannot be discharged from or at a motor vehicle or at a group of people.
Firework vendors in the city must provide purchasers with a written list of the days and hours when fireworks are legally permitted. Vendors must also provide written safety instructions appropriate for the type of fireworks sold.
