Domestic Violence Incident Ends in Tragedy

A domestic violence incident in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, resulted in two fatalities.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 28, 2024) – Detectives from the Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) Criminal Investigations Division are investigating a tragic incident where a woman was fatally shot by her boyfriend, who then took his own life. The individuals involved have been identified as Margarette Barksdale, 37, and James Shannon, 29.

Authorities responded to a call from neighbors and discovered the couple in an upstairs bedroom of a townhome on Nightshade Drive around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Emergency personnel from the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services attempted CPR and other medical interventions, but both Barksdale and Shannon were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Shannon shot Barksdale during a domestic altercation before turning the gun on himself. The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives Investigate Brawner Avenue Shooting

A targeted shooting on Brawner Avenue at 7 p.m. on Monday left 31-year-old Dondrinkus Dickerson critically injured, with a stolen handgun found beneath him. Detectives are investigating the incident, which also resulted in a 28-year-old bystander being injured and treated at Skyline Medical Center. Authorities are seeking information from the public, who can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
