Starting from 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) will embark on a significant 2.5-month project aimed at enhancing the natural gas and water systems for customers residing along and in the vicinity of the Cumberland Avenue corridor. This initiative marks a considerable effort to improve utility services in this densely populated area.
The initial phase of the project will see a complete closure of Cumberland Avenue, stretching from 11th Street to 16th Street, beginning from the commencement of the project through to 7 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22. This closure is expected to significantly impact traffic flow, prompting the need for commuters to seek alternative routes. The project plan also includes the closure of the sidewalk on the north side of Cumberland Avenue, further restricting pedestrian access. Additionally, access to Cumberland Avenue from James Agee Street and 13th Street will be blocked off during this period.
To assist in mitigating the impact on traffic and pedestrian movement, KUB has announced that electronic message boards and signage will be deployed to guide commuters and pedestrians towards detour routes. This is aimed at ensuring minimal disruption and maintaining safety in the area.
Following the initial closure, the project will enter its next phase from May 22 through August 8. During this period, the westbound lanes of Cumberland Avenue and the sidewalk on the north side will remain closed. Traffic will be rerouted to allow one lane of movement in each direction using what are typically the eastbound lanes.
The project is scheduled to culminate with another full closure towards the end of the upgrade period. This final closure will facilitate the completion of the upgrade work, leading to the reopening of all lanes and sidewalks. KUB’s efforts in this project underscore their commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and service delivery to its customers in the Cumberland Avenue area.
