Knox County’s Festival of Reading Celebrates Young Readers

The Children's Festival of Reading in Knox County honors literacy and young readers.

The Knox County Public Library is gearing up for an unforgettable Children’s Festival of Reading, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18, 2024, at the World’s Fair Park. This annual event marks the beginning of the summer reading program, attracting world-class authors, illustrators, storytellers, and musicians dedicated to celebrating the joy of reading among young attendees.

This year, the festival pays tribute to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Knox County, an initiative that gifts books to children under the age of five. A notable highlight of the event will be the Parade of Books at noon, featuring three-year-old Patience Collins as the Grand Marshall. Collins has been chosen for this honor as the recipient of the 4 millionth book distributed by the Knox County program since its inception in January 2005. Currently, the program reaches nearly 19,000 children each month, providing them with free books to encourage early literacy.

Celebrating its 18th year, the Children’s Festival of Reading is a testament to the community’s commitment to fostering a love for books and the literary arts among children. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with beloved book characters, including those from “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Paddington Bear,” and “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” Additionally, fans of Daniel Tiger will find joy in visiting the East Tennessee PBS’s tent for special activities.
