MNPD Assists West End Synagogue in Passover Celebration for 30th Year

Chief John Drake assumes legal ownership of leavened products through April 30.

Chief John Drake and Rabbi Joshua Kullock of the West End Synagogue today marked this evening’s beginning of Passover by Chief Drake assuming legal ownership of the congregation’s leavened products through the April 30 duration of the holiday.

Jewish families are prohibited from owning bread and leavened products associated with grains during the holiday, and in many instances place those items in a closet or cupboard that will stay closed during Passover. A rabbi is given power of attorney to transfer ownership of the products to a non-Jew until the holiday has ended.

This is the 30th year for the Passover partnership between the police department and the West End Synagogue. In appreciation for this annual tradition and the MNPD, the West End Synagogue is making a donation to a local charity.
