Joshua E. Coffee, 31, is charged with criminal homicide and felon in possession of a weapon for the fatal shooting of Alcapone Branch, 27, inside an apartment on University Court in the Sudekum Apartments on Thursday at 11:45 p.m.
According to police, Coffee allegedly shot the victim in the head before fleeing to a nearby apartment where he was taken into custody. A nine millimeter handgun, the same caliber used in the murder, was recovered from the couch that Coffee was lying on. During an interview, Coffee admitted that he had argued with Branch prior to the shooting.
At the time of the incident, Coffee, a registered ex-con for robbery, was free on $16,000 bond for a March 28 arrest for vehicle theft and two counts of felon in possession of a weapon. He also had outstanding warrants for federal gun charges.
